The Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund, Inc.® (KSEF) is the scholarship arm of the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.® KSEF was established in 1984 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation with the purpose of raising funds to be used for awarding scholarships to graduates of the District of Columbia Public and Public Charter High Schools. The initial goal was to raise $10,000 in five years but instead KSEF was able to raise $15,000 that first year.
Since that time KSEF has awarded approximately 2 million dollars in scholarships to 700 graduates of the DC Public and Public Charter High Schools. Our endowment is now in excess of $3 million as we pursue our goal of a $8 million endowment.
Goal
We did some intense market research, refined their brand message, and created a brand new look to truly showcase their identity.
For many years the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter sponsored several different activities to acknowledge the accomplishments of students at Washington DC high schools. A popular program was the Kap-Sil program, a joint activity with the Kappa Silhouettes of Washington, DC which recognized graduating seniors whose fathers were members of the Chapter.
In 1983 several members of the Chapter expressed a need for the Chapter to strengthen its scholarship program and to recognize the accomplishments of students of the DC Public School system. These members felt a separate charitable organization would enable the chapter to solicit support not merely from its members but also from also from outside sources including KappaMen who were not affiliated with the chapter, wives and friends of Chapter members, and corporations in the Washington metropolitan area, The effort was spearheaded by Brother Homer Kemp, a retiree, who opened his home to meetings of the interested group. The entity the group conceived was formally incorporated on February 16, 1984, and is known as the Kappa Scholarship Endowment Fund Inc.
